Apple's Q3 2023 revenue figures convey a complex narrative of success tempered by challenges

Apple reported a record-breaking September quarter revenue on Thursday, with iPhone sales witnessing an increase from the previous year—even accounting for just about a week or so of iPhone 15 sales. However, all other hardware segments of the company saw declines, contributing to a total revenue decrease for the fourth consecutive quarter, with the company earning a total of $89.5 billion for this period.

CEO Tim Cook, in a discussion with CNBC, highlighted that the iPhone 15 lineup is experiencing a stronger early momentum compared to the 14 series. "If you look at the iPhone 15 during that time frame and compare it to the iPhone 14 during the same period in the previous year's quarter, the iPhone 15 has performed better," he stated. He further noted that both the Pro and Pro Max models are currently facing supply constraints.

The Mac business suffered a significant setback, plummeting by 34 percent year over year. This decline could be seen as a driving factor behind Apple's decision to host the M3 event earlier this week, where the company unveiled updated MacBook Pros and a refreshed iMac. Cook characterized the current PC consumer market as "challenging."

In essence, Apple's Q3 revenue figures paint a picture of a tech giant that continues to dominate in the smartphone arena with its latest iPhone offerings while simultaneously facing headwinds in its traditional computing division. "I think the Mac will have a significantly better quarter in the December quarter," Cook told CNBC. "We have the M3, we have new products, and we do not have the comparison phenomenon on a year-over-year basis." Cook asserted that the Mac business was exceptionally strong at this point last year.
With no recent models to highlight, iPad revenue has fallen by 10 percent. Wearable device revenue has experienced a more substantial decline of 3 percent. As usual, Apple's services division has been a reliable source of income, increasing by 16 percent from the previous year. "Every main service reached a record," Cook said to CNBC.

The CEO of Apple appears optimistic about the company’s standing going into the holiday season. "We now have the strongest product lineup ever going into the holiday season, including the iPhone 15 lineup and our first carbon-neutral Apple Watch models, a major milestone in our efforts to make all Apple products carbon neutral by 2030," he stated in a press release.
Within Apple’s overarching business landscape, the Mac division currently stands out as an undeniable weak point. Nonetheless, with fresh and decisive initiatives such as the introduction of the new MacBook Pro and iMac, it is hoped that the company will soon achieve a turnaround in this segment.
