NSU Motorenwerke AG, also known as NSU, was a German automobile manufacturer that operated from 1873 to 1969. NSU initially started as a producer of knitting machines and bicycles before entering the motorcycle and automobile industry. NSU gained recognition for its motorcycles, which were successful in various racing events. In the early 1950s, NSU ventured into car manufacturing and produced popular models such as the NSU Prinz and NSU Ro80. The NSU Ro80, introduced in 1967, featured advanced engineering, including a rotary engine.

In 1969, NSU merged with Auto Union GmbH, which was later acquired by Volkswagen Group. The merger resulted in the formation of Audi NSU Auto Union AG. Over time, the NSU brand was phased out, and the company became Audi AG, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group.
